How To Create a Hub? or Hub Creation?
Welcome HubPages Member,
Welcome to HubPages! It's a pleasure to have you here and I certainly hope you enjoy yourself while you are here. So let's get you started. How To Create a Hub or Hub Creation is pretty much self explanatory, however, with the growing number of people coming to HubPages I thought you could use a starter Hub to help you along your way.
I am pretty sure you can find other Hubs on the same topic, but I'm not quite sure how helpful they are going to be for you, considering I've not investigated other people's Hubs before writing this one. Even with that said, I am going to cover some of the most basic information, so you can get started fairly quickly and without fail publish a Hub that will not be unpublished by HubPages Team of moderators. Yes, each Hub you create will have to pass through an initial screening process(filter). This is a protection process to ensure you do not break the rules of HubPages TOS(terms of service) and/or Google Adsense TOS. It protects you and HubPages.

Start a New Hub - Hub Creation
To get you started, at the top of every page on HubPages you can find "green" letters- "Start a New Hub". When you click on that, it will bring you to a new page, which will look like the picture to the right. You will have begun the "Hub Creation" process.
As you can see from the picture, you'll have several things to do before you can begin writing your new hub.
Section #1) Title Creation
Section #2) URL and/or Web Address
Section #3) Categorization for Hub
Section #4) Hub Format/Layout
Section #5) Tag Selection Process
And, last on this page- a Continue button.
I'll cover each section and explain to the simple steps you need to do. However, I will be adding a little bit of additional information, which you should know before you click "continue" at the bottom of the page.

Keyword Hubs You Should Read
- How to choose the BEST traffic driving Key Words for SEO Content
Gain traffic to your Hub Pages by using Google Adwords Keyword Tool. Here is how you can accomplish picking relevant keywords for your content! - Keyword tips - How to pick keywords that make money
Lets get right to it. If your here, you should have a basic understanding of what a keyword is and the understanding of how keyword tips on how to select keyword terms will drastically change your traffic and income potential.
Title Creation - Picking a Title For Your hub
This can be a tricky thing to do. Why? Because there is some information which you should have before you even begin to select/pick your Title. On the right hand side there's a picture of a gray box and this box will appear when you begin the Hub Creation process. It is a helpful hint for the Title section. Make sure you read it, either now or when you begin the Hub Creation process. It won't change so don't worry about that.
As you can see, it says that you can select a Title up to 120 character or less. No HTML! Your Title will be indexed by Search Engines of the Online World (e.g. Google, Yahoo, Bing and others). However, what you really need to know is that many Search Engines do not display Titles that are over 60-65 characters in length, completely. Actually, if you Title is over 65 characters long, then when your hub is found on Search Engines it will run off into dots ......... at the very end and not all of your Title will be displayed for the searcher.
Not to mention, when creating your Title, you should make sure that all the words are correctly spelled and make sense. Also, you will need to do keyword research and insert as many keywords as you can in your Title. What Is Keyword Research? Well, that's the tricky part. Your hub is going to be indexed on Search Engines and Search Engines look for specific keywords in Titles, URL/Web Addresses and Content on Page. You can use Google Keyword Tool software for checking out Keywords which are searched for.

Do you ever feel like reaching into your computer screen to just grab that traffic and bring it to your hubs? This hub offers several tutorials on how to generate traffic to your hubs. Plus, provides resources on how to develop referral trackers and - The Easiest Ways to Get Backlinks
Writing articles should be your number one priority if you plan on earning any substantial amount of money from online ventures. After writing your article, you want to submit that article to as many article directories as you can locate.
URL/Web Address Creation
One thing you will notice is that when you create your Title, you'll also see that your URL/Web Address Creation begins. It isn't necessary for your Title and URL/Web Address to match, but it certainly doesn't hurt if they don't. You can create your own unique URL/Web Address if you want to do so. All you have to do is change what is typed in the URL/Web Address box.
It is recommended that you make this area also Keyword rich. It will be beneficial to you and your ability to rank among Search Engines. What does that mean? Search Engines take a number of different factors into account when "ranking" URLs/Web Addresses. Ranking only means your placement within a Search Engines search results. You could place in the #1 spot on search results or you could place on the 50th page of search results. There's not one specific way to gain the #1 spot, due to many Search Engines use an algorithm that have a bunch of different variables. No one online has a sure-fire method, but there are some people who have found that doing specific things can be beneficial.

Categorization Selection Process
Okay, this part is a little tricky in and of itself, because it's not known what type of impact your Category selection will have on your written hub. It is known that Search Engine crawlers and/or bots will crawl over your page, reading everything that is on your hub. This would include, the category, sub-category, sub-sub-category and the sub-sub-sub-category.
Yes, you heard me correctly. HubPages Categorization process can possibly bury your hub in a flurry of other hubs, within a sub-sub-sub-category. It can also bury your hub in a generalized category as well. So let me explain. Topics (right click and open in a new tab to see the topics page) can be very generalized or they can be very specific. Again, this choice is completely up to you, the Hub Author.
After you have put in your Title and got your URL/Web Address squared away, HubPages Platform software will use the words to identify a category and/or sub-category, and/or sub-sub-category. Example: Let's say for the sake of arguments that your hub is going to be a Poem. Then your "generalized" category would be under "Books, Literature and Writing". The sub-category would be "Books, Literature and Writing- Poems and Poetry". And, the sub-sub-sub-category would be "Books, Literature and Writing- Poems and Poetry- Dramatic Poetry".

Hub Format/Layout Selection Process
Your hub format/layout selection is based on your experience. So with that being said, if you are new to HubPages and you begin to write your first hub, then when you approach this particular section, you will select one of the four available formats/layouts. You are presented with four options, but since you are new, you will only use option #2 or #3, to get you started.
There are four different templates(format/layouts) you can choose from and your experience makes all the difference. The first template is for advanced users, so if you are new, you will not be using it. The second template will grant you the ability to use the most basic format and get going. The third is also another form of the most basic format/layout, which you can use. The only difference between #2 and #3 is the way the capsules of the hub are situated. Option #4 is only for already published authors. Meaning that you can use a format/layout of one of your already written hubs. HubPages Platform software will load a previously used hub format/layout, so you can have all the capsules you want without having to add any later.

Tag Selection Process
You can select a minimum of two separate tags to create your hub. You do not have to select more than that to start. However, it is best that you enter some of the keywords from your keyword research. A Tag and a Keyword are search terms people will use to locate your article(hub). At one point in time, earlier in my time on HubPages, the optimum number of tags/keywords was preset at 9-15 for hubs up to 1500 words. And, up to 40 for hubs over 1500 words. There's an unwritten rule about word minimum on HubPages and it goes like this- all poems have no minimum, but normal articles have a minimum 300-400 words, before they are slammed with a "substandard" moderation flag. If you have an article less than the above, then it is likely to be flagged either by staff(moderation team) or other hub authors.
Now, please make sure that when you click continue at the bottom of the Hub Creation page and proceed to the next screen that you are all set with the parameters on this initial page. Once you go to the next page and click on create hub, you will be unable to change or alter your URL/Web Address. You will be able to alter the Title, Category, Format/Layout and Tags/Keywords, but not the URL/Web Address. Also remember, if you followed the instructions in this hub, then your Title(changeable) and URL/Web Address are going to have keywords in them, but only one of them can be changed.
Conclusion of the Hub Creation
Once you click on continue and go to the next page, and click on "create hub", then you will be brought to the format/layout which you selected. Your keywords/tags will be in place on the right side and your title will be in place at the top.
You can begin writing your hub by simply clicking on edit on the text capsule HubPages Platform software put in as you requested. I certainly hope you produce quality content and don't rush to complete it.
Thank you for your time.

Great hub! I am not a newbie, but I am trying to revise some hubs. I still like to learn as much as possible. :-) Voted Up, useful, and interesting!
Hey Cagsil - even though I am not brand spanking new I had no experience with this type of program before I started so the more info the better. I didn't know some of this stuff - I have always used layout #1 - I didn't realize 2 or 3 might be an easier format to work with. Lots of great info! Thank you so much!
Great hub! I could have used this when first starting out! Voted up and useful
Someone just asked how to do this in the forums. I wish I could link to your hub, but I'd get snipped. Great work, Cagsil. You do a great job at clearly explaining this process to new hubbers. Voted up, etc.
I have not still used video, map, and many other capsules. I'm also trying to revise my hubs that have small traffic. Thanks for your suggestion and useful links.
Very informative hub. I found out the hard way that you couldn't change the URL after clicking the continue button. I tried to go back and change it after determining a better title and oops.. couldn't do it. Just enough detail...
Hey darling god you are a clever man. I am sure this will be a great help to people. Have a wonderful Xmas xxxxxxxxxxx
Cags, This is really great for new Hubbers.
Cagsil - I really appreciate the hub - and the time you always take to help others. I struggle with this stuff so I am eternally thankful!
Hi Cagsil, if I didn't know this stuff I would have definitely found this hub of great help. The newbies will thank you, I will share because I seem to attract more newbies than oldies...lol
Cagsil...
Excellent information. The newbies shall conduct pagan rituals of praise when they find this, I am sure. As I recently saw someone publish a Hub as a Forum post...I think your material is timely.
Thomas
PS...congrats on the 100th Hub mark!
Very informative and would have needed it if my daughter tlpoague hadn't been able to help me get started. I have some new hubbers though so will share this with them
I think HubPages does a good job making the publishing as easy as possible. I started out at another site, and it was SO difficult to manage. I find HP is easy. I just learned how to do the map. It just amazes me that we're able to imbed a video into the Hub. I think that's a great feature. I voted this UP, etc. Thanks.
Am new here and the cause of knowing full how to make use of hupages, i came across this useful, educative and informative particularly as i navigate through the hubpages. many thanks.

After being here 2 years this was helpful to me. Thanks for posting this information.
Voted up.
Fine job! Congratulations on having the highest ranked hub and a score of 100!
This is indeed a great hub. This would guide someone through the hub creation process with ease. I am looking forward to reading some of your additional resources as well. This would be really good the first time you create a hub.
This is just what the doctor ordered for a new hubber like me. I was feeling jittery after going through numerous hubs at the Learning Center. This hub brings the essentials of hub creation in one place, making it easy and simple for first-time hubbers. A big thank you!
Thanks Cagsil for this hub.I would suggest HP staff to include link to this hub in help section. It will definitely help new members in creating their first hub.
Thank You very much, I have not written a hub yet and was not sure about how hard it would have been. After reading your article, which is very informative, I have a little more confidence.
Great displays here and informative info guide on how to write a hub. I had the upper hand as are many web developers or experienced blog developers who've joined hubpages after years of outside exposure to such modules and tooling, but those who are new to it all, this will definitely do the job in jump starting the overall learning process.
As you've so elegantly put it positioning techniques and how you categorize your hubs prior to its creation also makes all the difference as well. I might add the use of image editing (Ex:Photoshop or us of graphics editors) prior to hub development works wonders as well.
Awesome hub, voted up in many ways & getting shared outside of hubpages.
Helpful for Newbies
Is the optimum number of tags really 40 for hubs of 1500 words? That seems a little high.
You have compiled the relevant points so nicely and within such a precise body, I loved reading it. I was brushing up on my information, and had many little things to add to my knowledge. I am very new, if you consider my activity on HubPages and its never too much to learn for me. This was so useful. Thank you.
Wow. Great stuff. One question, how long should a string of keywords be? (I'm new) If my hub is about apples, should I include the word "apples" in between every comma i.e. "golden delicious apples, red apples, green apples, apples"? I know this seems like a stupid question, but what does hubpages like? and what will get found in the search engines?
Hi Cagsil,
Very informative hub, do you think as far as categories go a hub should not go to sepcific or dig deep for a category placement. I always struggle with this part and am not sure which is best on Hubpages.
Thanks for writing another helpful hub. I'm sure I will come back to this hub and read it again. Great information!
Cagsil-- I read this, and teh biggest thing that hit home was "spell" the title correctly-- I think too many people seem to think that if they mis-spell popular words then they will make money? (I think but am not sure!) which in my mind is a silly way to do so, since I am trying to spell things correctly-- I think people do like that part.
as a newbie and your audience, I can say that this Hub was helpful and informative! I voted useful.
Thank you for the great starter advise.
Thanks for providing us with some useful tips and tricks of the trade ... It would have been nice to have read this before posting my first blog ..
Excellent walkthrough Cagsil. I'm sure this will help both new and experienced hubbers!
Thanks for sharing such a wonderful post. It clear my concept at great level.
Thanks
As a newbie any help is appreciated. You have tossed a lot at me in this article but it is all useful. Thank you for the insights.
This is a great help, and it doesn't only benefit newbies. I learned a little something from here as well. Great work! :D
I was wondering after publishing 2-hubs why am I getting the message: "Insufficient content"
They never mentioned the length of the article or the word count. Thanks to your article now I know what was I missing.
I am a new hubber, very useful information. Keep up the good works.
Thanks so much for this step by step guide to starting a hub. I'm a newbie and I'm trying to read as many helpful hints and guideline articles as I can before I attempt to do one myself. There is so much to remember, it's a little overwhelming, but I'm really excited about the process.
This hub is a great tool to learn the ins and outs of writing hubs. I appreciate your work in helping us newbies to succeed. Thanks a lot.
Thank you for the tips. I have been doing a lot of research. The tips will help new hubbers like me.
This was great information. I am always looking for instructions that I can understand in simple terms and you have done this! I think some forget that not all of us newbies understand the process or the terms yet. Vote up!
This was simple to follow and very helpful. I managed to do one for a run through but I am still learning about all the ropes. Thanks.
thank you i hope this will help me.
Thank you for the informative hub! I'll look for your other hubs on.....hubs!
Great hub and one I'll point others to when I'm next asked about the best way to build hubs!
Cagsll thanks for being unselfish. Your decision to write such article will serve many throughout this community. I love the method of each one teach one. As individuals we are all different learners, its a "Mind at a Time." Your article has been very clear, concise and informative; as a newbie its a great tool that I will use for future reference. Once again thank you for providing such an invaluable knowledge. YUP
cagsil...
Ok...I see I need to do a lot with title tweaking, tags (I use the same two all the time), and keywords...just all of that.
Thanks,
Thomas

As a new hubber this hub was of great help. Thank you for all the helpful information.
When you have been here for awhile, a lot of this is learned by trial and error. My mom always used to say "life is too short to learn EVERYTHING by experience".
By the comments that have been posted, it is evident that a lot of people have learned from your experience.
Sometimes we forget that we didn't know all of this to start out.
Thank you! This was very helpful :)

Alot of detail here! I don't know how you did the pics but I like. Very helpful for a beginner who "has no clue" like I did! LOL.
