The Top 10 Most Common Mistakes New Members Make!
Welcome New Members,
Welcome to HubPages also, if I haven't already said or that you've not read another one of my hubs for new members. The Top 10 Most Common Mistakes New Members make should be obvious, but too many people who are new members continue to make the same mistake over again. That is the exact reason I wrote this particular Hub. Do take notice I said I wrote a "Hub". It is rather important considering you are on HubPages' website.
The Top 10 Most Common Mistakes:
(#1) Mistaking Hub Writing as Blogging
(#2) Failure To Read Important Rule Documents
(#3) Mistaking HubPages Community and Social Networking Sites
(#4) Misunderstanding HubPages Question and Answer Section
(#5) Failure To Use Solid Grammar and Sentence Structure While Writing a Hub
(#6) Mistaking HubPages as a Get-Rich-Quick Scheme
(#7) Failure To Take Time To Learn HubPages
(#8) Failure To Write a Creative Profile
(#9) Failure To Write Unique/Original Quality Content
(#10) Failure To Put Effort Into HubPages
Common Mistake #1: Mistaking Hub Writing as Blogging
Mistake #1) As a New Member of HubPages, you are not here to write typical blog posts. A Blog post is usually short and will link to another location. A Blog itself can contain hundreds of different blog posts. A Hub Page doesn't. A Hub Page contains one magazine style type article, which should be researched and informative. The average Blog post is about 200-300 words, but a Hub Page is at minimum is 400-500 words. It's understood that a Blog post can be just as long as a Hub Page, but on average it isn't. Not to mention, a Hub and a Blog are defined as different things. On a side note- HubPages does have rules about lengths of articles. These rules do not apply to Poems/Poetry, but do apply to everything else.

Common Mistake #2: Failure To Read Important Rule Documents
Mistake #2) It is your duty as a New HubPages Member to read all the required rules, guidelines, regulations and documents, so you can one the most important thing you can do- protect your account and income generation opportunity. Below is a list of the rules, guidelines, regulations and documents you should read. The only ones I haven't included are tax related, which is something you should look into for one reason- as a Member of HubPages you are self-employed. Yes, you work for yourself. You can call yourself whatever you like, such as a Freelance writer. If you operate a Blog, then you can consider yourself a blogger. Either way, you are accountable for the income generation you create and only you are responsible for reporting the earnings in which you make.

Common Mistake #3: Mistaking HubPages Community and Social Networking Sites
Mistake #3) There have been many New Members who have come to HubPages and seem to be under the impression that HubPages is a social networking site. So what do they do? They act like HubPages is a social networking site. They go into the forums, post links to personalized sites. They go to the question and answer section, ask tons of meaningless questions without actually reading the rules about posting questions. They act like the questions and answers section is setup for a discussion, which it isn't. They vote up or down questions and answers in the hopes that it will help improve their Authorscore(Hubberscore- the picture next to your profile picture). They go hog wild doing this without realizing the effects. They visit people's hubs and drop links to external sites which are not even relevant. They visit people's hubs and make brief(two words) comments, thinking that people will do the same for them. This isn't always the case and each author is different with regards to what they do.

Common Mistake #4: Misunderstanding HubPages Questions and Answer Section
Mistake #4) The biggest misunderstanding was mentioned above, but I am going to say it again. The Questions and Answers section is NOT for discussions. You post a Question and other HubPages members are going to answer the question if they are interested. The original intent on the Questions and Answers section is to encourage authors to write a hub on the topic and not get into a discussion. If you want to get into a discussion, then by all means visit the forum threads. Another common mistake New Members make about the Questions and Answer section is that many will post Questions which can be Answered with one word answers, such as Yes or No. Or their Question can be answered in a really short sentence. Again, this is NOT what the Questions and Answers section is for nor is it how it should be used.

Common Mistake #5: Failure To Use Solid Grammar and Sentence Structure While Writing a Hub
Mistake #5) One of the most common mistakes many people do not realize they make is grammar and sentence structure while they are writing hubs. I know, I do it myself and it's a constant mistake almost every person makes. This is why you should not publish any article until you have proofread it several times. The authors who usually do not make this sort of mistake are people who are well versed in English, such as Teachers. HubPages has many Teachers among it's membership and they could run across your hub. When they attempt to read it from beginning to end, they are most likely to flag your hub if it contains too many grammar issues or poorly constructed sentences.
If American(U.S.) English is not your first or primary language, then you could run into problems more so than other people. The UK English is similar to the American(U.S.) English, but transposes specific letters in a lot of words. This could work to be a disadvantage because HubPages is an American based company and it's primary market is American citizens. Some Americans are not likely to understand that the minor changes the UK English makes and some might even think that the author does not know how to write because they'll see the transposed words as incorrectly spelled words. They could leave your page. It's possible.
Common Mistake #6: Mistaking HubPages as a Get-Rich-Quick Scheme
Mistake #6) Many New Members come to HubPages through various marketing and advertising promotions. Some people get the idea that HubPages can make people money and/or generate earnings. Which it can do. However, many of those same people assume that HubPages is a Get-Rich-Quick scheme which can make them tons of money quickly. Now, do not take this the wrong way, but it can generate you an residual monthly earnings and it can be a sufficient amount on a monthly scale. But, don't assume that you will be getting rich quickly. It isn't likely to happen and you will only be disappointed. HubPages provides a legitimate opportunity to create earnings through various online marketing strategies and a home-based developed program known as the HubPages Ads Program.
If you are capable of producing quality writing and you create quality hubs, then you can possibly make a six figure income yearly. However, make no mistake assuming it is going to be easy, quick or overnight. It isn't going to happen. As you learned above, HubPages has it's own program to help authors earn from their writing. However, you can make earnings via Ebay and Amazon, and Google Adsense. Each of these programs will help you make collective earnings. You can write sales hubs to sell products available on Ebay or Amazon. You will be paid for your whatever is sold. (*note: the Amazon program is going to be under construction shortly because HubPages is going to be adapting it for their in-house HubPages Ads Program.) The Ebay opportunity is already incorporated into the HubPages Ads Program. HubPages has also incorporated Google Adsense revenue sharing into it's in-house Program.

Common Mistake #7: Failure To Take Time To Learn HubPages
Mistake #7) This particular mistake is so common it's not even funny. Many New Members are so excited to get started and that excitement leads them to making this mistake. They fail to take time to learn the ins and outs of HubPages. They do not stop to review some of the other things I mentioned in this hub. This isn't always obvious because the excitement is motivating them to push forward. Thus, other mistakes are made aside from this list of mistakes.
And when they have their hubs unpublished for whatever reasons, they then jump into the forums screaming bias or censorship and wanted to chop off the heads of the moderators. One of the most common mistake many New Members make after a hub has been unpublished is to scream that they want to know who flagged their hub and why? This is usually explained by the moderators or should I say...why is explained. Who flagged your hub will never be told to you, so don't ask. Flagging a hub for whatever reason only brings that hub to the moderator's attention. If the moderator agrees, then the hub is unpublished. If the disagree, then the flag is dismissed and discarded as meaningless. You were provided a link to The Learning Center and I highly suggest you get used to using it.

Common Mistake #8: Failure To Write a Creative Profile
Mistake #8) Another common mistake is failing to write a creative profile. As you become a member, moving from New Member status to Veteran Member status, your profile is going to get a lot of visitors. You will be visited by Online Professionals, other Hub Authors and even many people who read an article and want more to read of your work. Your avatar and a link to your profile is on every page you publish and all a reader has to do is click on your profile link to read more of your writing.
However, if you don't create a relatively creative profile then you are likely to lose your reader. It is also a good chance that when people visit your profile directly to learn about you and whether or not you would be suited for a specific task, like writing a hub for money and you don't have a profile filled out...an opportunity is lost. There are some Online and Offline Professionals who frequent HubPages website because it's a Writing Community. So, do yourself a favor and create a profile that speaks volumes about you and your writing.

Common Mistake #9: Failure To Write Unique/Original Quality Content
Mistake #9) Failure to write unique or original quality content. This happens to be the biggest mistake New Members make. They assume because they have written in other places(people who are not so new to the Internet and are branching outward) that they can publish what they have published elsewhere. This isn't allowed at HubPages. It's called "duplicate content". Another stunt tried by New Members is to use "quotes" of other people or from books, such as the Bible in their hubs, but they do not add unique or original content to the hub. This is also going to be flagged as "duplicate content".
If you have the nerve to try this, then you will be sorely mistaken to think that HubPages will allow it. Quoting from either other authors or famous people is allowed, but you must add a lot of unique or original content to the rest of the hub, so it's not deemed "duplicate content". Famous people quotes are already on the Internet, even if you don't think so. Every passage from the Bible is already on the Internet in duplicate form as it is now and you just adding the same lines to a hub to just make a hub, isn't going to cut the mustard. It will be pulled down.
Your articles must have an essence of YOU in them otherwise they are no good. If you select trending subject matters, then you are going to hurt yourself because these types of things do not hold weight simply due to the fact that they are trending topics. It's good for a short period, but not good for long term. The object is to write about things you know, but also understand that you want to provide your readers with valuable insight or information, which they can either link to or share with other people. The word of mouth advertising method has never seen an equal and you should want to use that to your advantage.

Common Mistake #10: Failure To Put Effort Into HubPages
Mistake #10) Failure to put effort into HubPages is yet another common mistake. Many people, newcomers, think that they can spend 5-10 minutes a day on HubPages and make money. It isn't going to happen. There are some people who spend hours on HubPages, but spend most of in the forums. This is yet another bad idea, because it prevents you from learning unless you're in the forums to gain information or knowledge about HubPages. If you go to the forums and that is not the reason you went there, then you are essentially wasting time. There's an advantage to spending time in the forums and that advantage is for posting. Yes, posting to the forums you create an internal link back to your profile. Every post you create in the forums leaves your avatar and a profile link. This is one method of creating internal link "juice"(SEO term- for you to learn later about). Internal links cannot hurt you.
The main objective HubPages wants from you as a Member is quality content, interaction within the community and a professional manner in which you promote yourself as a self-employed freelance writer. Interaction within the community is about posting to the forums, reading other members articles, asking questions in the questions section and answering questions from the questions sections by writing quality content hubs.
How much effort you put into what you do at HubPages and other Online places is what is going to determine your success. Not to mention, if you fail to put in the effort to learn about HubPages, the ins and outs, then you are only wasting your time here. HubPages has a great community of people, a very easy to use Publishing software and a user-friendly Learning Center to guide you forward. When you put that together, then you can be sure of a safe bet...you'll learn and earn from what you write. Failing to do so will cause frustration, low self esteem, lack of confidence and a host of other issues, which will lead you to believe that HubPages is a scam. It's not.
Thank you for your time.

Good hub, this highlights some of the things that really get under my skin, especially grammar, I can't say everything I write is perfect, but if a hub has multiple or really bad mistakes in the opening paragraph, I will leave the page. Also, another thing you could have mentioned, maybe related to the blogging, is when people post a ton of poor quality hubs thinking that it will help their HubScore.
As a new hubber this was informative for me. I will have to re-evaluate some of my hubs and my profile. Thank you for writing this.
Cagsil, this is one excellent hub. You touch on several key points that many new hubbers have questions with and detail them clearly and in a very easy to read format. I even learned a few new things!
Great hub, Raymond. Very useful and served as a great 'pulse-check' for me. Thanks!
Hey, Cagsgil! This is another winner. Everyone could benefit from following these rules. It is so important. I know I spent my first day on hubpages watching all of the tutorial videos that can be found in the learning center. I learned so much those first few days that I spent almost entirely in the learning center. I still go there to find answers. I can't say I understood everything I read and viewed at the time, but it exposed me to lots of different information that gradually started building on the things that I did understand. It built a good foundation for me to build on. Another thing that helped is I was willing to ask for help when I needed it. And I listened to the advice that everyone shared.
I spent more time looking for answers in the forums than I did interacting at first. You learn alot about the forums just watching the interactions. I still spend time looking for information because I still have lots to learn.
Great hub!
Thank you, Cagsil. This is a useful reminder that HubPages (and the Internet in general) should not be taken as all fun and games. Writing, be it hubs or wikipedia entries or blog posts, leaves a footprint, especially on the Internet. We should all be able to stand proudly by our work.
Fantastic hub Ray! Loaded with important lessons to learn! Consider it shared!
That was a great hub with lots of useful information for new hubbers like me. Thanks for the information.
i feel so guilty. that means, i have to learn a lot. it's gonna be a long way. but at least there is a better way. thanks for pointing this out.
Thanks a bunch Raymond! I will give them a look. I know I'm not going to make fast money, but I really want to lay a good foundation here at Hubpages. I will check out those writers and see what I can learn.
Vanessa :D
You are a wealth of info Cags, you are the bees knees. You ought to be the big boss of hubpages sitting behind a desk with a cigar in your hand. I would have put you in my hot hubbers hub but I just ran out of time I half cheated with material I already had from my first one that was closed. My relationship just ended and my mind is all over the place. Also is it really true you are getting married lol? xx
I feel pretty good. I didn't make these mistakes. I am no gremmie. My shoes show wear.
Now there are other mistakes I have made, and that is fuel for a hub . . . "Its Not My First Rodeo, but I Still Got Thrown by the Bull"
Excellent points. Even veteran hubbers can always use a refresher course.
Voted up, useful and shared!
if i have read this before embarking on hubbing I wouldn't have been banned for TWO MONTHS...i wasn't allowed to publish on my first two months because of Hubpages violation...uh uh...great tips Cagsil...thanks for sharing...
Great info Cagsil - even after being here for several months, these are good reminders.
I read a comment today where one fellow hubber was advising a new hubber that what was written was very good, but needed to be proofed and then it would be better. The contributor was happy with the advice. I noted three or four hours later that the material still had all the errors in it, including spelling mistakes. I would have thought these things would have been fixed immediately. Your top 10 pointers in your hub are excellent, that's the shortest version I can offer right now. Thank you.
I hope that new HubPages members do take the time to read this hub, as well as the information you have so carefully set forth above - and linked to! A little preparation can go a long way toward ensuring success at this site. Rushing in will not... and it is harder to dig out of a reputation as a spammer and/or one who does not follow the rules than it is to simply prepare and think before posting or publishing a hub. Rated up - great job!
EXCELLENT! This is an exceptional resource for newbies and veterans. I greatly appreciate all the work you put into this Ray - well done! I spy several familiar hubs and I am honored to be included.
Voted up and shared!!
Gee cags I have never been banned does that mean I aint a bad girl after all?
Ray, this is great advice for new members. I hope this hub goes straight to the top so new members will see it and follow the guidelines you have provided. I know you spent a lot of time on this hub. New members need to know that if they are going to be writers, there is a lot of work and research involved. What may come naturally to our minds does not always come out as readable material. Great hub! Voted up, useful, awesome, and interesting. I will be sharing this, too. :-)
I think that hp should be able to do whatever they want with their program, but it is not fair nor reasonable to not give a hubber a reasonable forum on an alleged violation rather than a unilateral beheading.
Without meaningful feedback one cannot learn, and flagging and citing violations without adequate foundation for the hubber to review doesn't help improve the writing of the hubber. The reason is that they probably don't know what they did that was wrong.
A substantial portion of a hub caused a violation. In a long hub, how does the hubber know what part was a violation and how they can correct it.
Rated this down because it didn't include the points that I have mentioned here.
This is a most useful hub. I recognize myself in at least two or three of the mistakes new hubbers make and I'm glad that over time I worked through them. It would have been nice to have had your article to refer to early on.
Great hub Cagsil. I gave you a vote up and a a "useful" vote
Hi cagsil.Nice hub.I made lost of mistakes now i realize that. When i need help i ill contact you.You are real tutor of hubpages.Keep posting like that.
Thanks
Thank you for sharing these wonderful guidelines for new hubbers. Thankfully I haven't been guilty of many of these from what I am aware of. Your advice was concrete and well written. Thank you so much for sharing this with the community. I really appreciate the assistance. Great hub. Voted up up and away.
Very useful and informative. I am new to online writing and hubpages. Hubs like this in addition to the learning center help me tremendously. Thanks!
It is a great idea to put all this information down in one article. There is a lot to learn on hubpages and it takes a while to figure it all out. I know it took me a while to get the hang of it. I also have found that if you do have a violation that the staff usually will respond to an email and correct the error if they did in fact incorrectly mark an article as having a violation. So, you just learn from experience to wait it out and not overreact. Eventually you learn all the rules. Voted up and useful!
Thank you Cagsil. This hub is exactly what I needed. Over two years ago when I joined HubPages, I wrote three hubs and didn't really have the patience to learn about how to write hubs. I didn't take the time to learn all the rules either. I came back to HubPages two years later and started witing here again. I still have so much to learn and this hub is very helpful to me and probably all new members. Thanks!
Wow! What a thorough, well-organized, informative hub! Thank you so much for sharing and taking the time to write this! Voted up and some other buttons. :)
This is a great hub and all newbies should read it. Of course you couldn't cover every single problem people would have. You did say the 10 most common ones.
Really great tips. This should be required reading for every new hubber. Well-done!
Thanks, Is it a must to write minimum 400 words article in Hubpages?
When someone signs up at HP, he should be immediately taken to this hub. I see people in the forum refer to their hubs as "blogs." Weird. Even if HP were like a blog, an article/hub would be a blog POST not an entire blog.
I am amazed when people have no bio or (gasp) no avatar pic. What? Really? You can put something there. Something.
Great Hub, Voted up and really useful. Their are many resourceful hubs but making a hub to connect them is really a good Idea. Thanks for a Great Hub.
Thank you for writing this very informative Hub. There is so much to learn and as a new writer here, I am still trying to find my voice and figure out my writing style.
I wish this hub was here when I first started but I am glad it is now:) We can always use some good advice. You did a fantastic job writing an hub with all this useful information and with so many good links! Voted up, useful,
Tina
Excellent information. Just like many people never read the directions when assembling a new product, some don't read the guidelines here.
Cagsil - all very I portent things to consider and repeat! I've been on HP for almost a year now and there is so much to learn ... But I really love knowing how much help people like you are when I'm looking for answers:). Thanks!
Very useful information. I've bookmarked this and intend to refer back to it often as I continue to explore Hubpages.
Thanks for the great advice to new hubbers. How many people who've been writing for some time on HubPages could also use it? I hop hubs a couple of times a week, and I get so annoyed when I start to read a hub, and it's obviously not been proofread before it was published! It's a pet peeve.
I also dislike terrible grammar, but not all people who have something to say also have a facility with words. However, the lack of proofreading is just sloppy work.
Cagsil,
I am not exactly new, but I am going to check my profile, and I will have to return to finish reading your great hub, as my little Pomeranian wants me to hand feed him--I have spoiled him. Well, that is what is he for to love and spoil.
Thanks,
Bobbi
This is a wonderful article, not just for new members. It's ironic. I have read some of the success stories of hubbers and most of them that are publicized have been on here at least two years and make less monthly than what is necessary to pay their bills were it their only source of income. Of course, there are a large number who don't talk about their earnings at all. But I think the six figure incomes you mean have been here 4 or 5 years, have hundreds if not over a thousand hubs and have not been greatly impacted by Panda.
Cagsil,
Hi, I voted Up, useful and interesting. Very Good Tutorial for new and veterans hubbers. You really wrote to a large audience, and I for one appreciate the review, as I have been here 11 months, and I am still learning. You will probably be the first hubber that I will follow, as I always just follow people back who follow me. But I want to make sure I read everything useful you write.
Thanks from a Country Girl,
Bobbi
Great Hub-and thanks for the links! I love what you have showcased here (specially the; its-it's, there-their-they're, to-two-too word confusion/mishap). I use to do that, and not because I do not know the difference, but because I was not paying attention to what it was I was writing. I agree that it is critical for new hubbers to take the time to write, and write well to optimize their experience here. Thanks for this hub and for the great suggestions and gathering all those wonderful links to other great hubpage articles. :) Voted Up- Shared-Tweeted-Plus 1- and marked Useful and Awesome!
Good job!
Wish I'd had this to look at two years ago.
Gosh the race goes to the person with endurance. I get a kick out of folks talking about being disappointed in their earnings...then I look, and sure enough, they've got twenty half assed hubs.
Get rich quick scams don't last five years - I dunno why anyone would think making money from writing online should be easy.
Oh God, the Q & A!!!!
I stopped skimming the Q & A half so much, it's miserable looking at the pointless questions that have no answer that some new person is asking - seems like half the time all that they are really saying is "hey look at me!!!"
Taking the time to write a hub to guide newcomers so they can avoid the pitfalls you so cleverly describe here is a reflection of your caring nature.
I have made lots of mistakes in my life so making them in HubPages was nothing new. I have tended to live my life by learning from my own mistakes and always chose that route rather than heed the warnings. I suppose that is because I felt that everyone experiences life in their own unique way so the connections and associations they make are unique to them. There are of course the obvious rules that are necessary to safeguard our well being and that of others but besides that even though I cringe at some of the mistakes I have made I wouldn't change anything.
I do however agree with most of what you have said in this hub and feel that the points you make would lead any writer to improve the quality of their writing and of course attract a bigger following.
Thank you.
Great Hub Cags, with much needed information. I am sure as one who is constantly answering questions on the Need help ask forum threads, your hub answers most of the newbies questions and they will be greatly helped by this hub, if only they care to read it!
I almost imagined what you look like, sound like and what kind of gestures you would make while talking through this Hub. Very well written and highly informative. Voted up. And will most definitely share this.
Useful stuff, thank you! Think I'm only guilty of 1.5 of those. I need to improve my profile and I write in UK English. I'll fix the first but not the second I'm afraid.
Wow, look at you go!!! Great Hub!! ;-)
Wunnerful, wunnerful, Cagsil. Although I've been on Hubpages for over 2 years now I find something everyday that I wasn't aware of and this Hub gave direction to my "improvement" search. Not being a researcher by nature I find myself writing about experiences, interesting folks I've known, fiction, etc. Having done law research for so many years as a paralegal I fear I'm burned out on research and it's so very important to success on Hubpages. You've encouraged me to get back in the "education" saddle and go forward again. Voted UP! Best, Sis
I don't even know where to begin with a comment. This hub is perfect. I couldn't agree more, and couldn't have written it better.
THANK YOU for creating this hub.
Voted up, useful, and awesome! I am going to spend the next few days creating & implementing a "love" button just for this hub. lol (Or a way to make it mandatory for new hubbers to read this, prior to publishing their first hub!)
Great hub, Ray, and chock full of excellent information. I used to read and re-read every HubPages how-to I could find (and still check them out). There is so much to absorb as a newcomer, it can be pretty mind-boggling. Thanks for such an easy to follow guide.
Great hub! Well-organized with lots of useful information for new and old hubbers.
I intend to refer back to it often.
Consider it shared!
Sannel
I can't get rich quick? That does it, I'm going home. :o)
Great information for new Hubbers, hopefully they will read and take note.
Thank you for a really informative hub.
Sunnie
I wish this hub was available when I started out....lots of great pointers that will help out lots of new hubbers....job well done.
Though I'm not a newbie to HP (I've been here for a bit longer than a year), I checked out your list to determine if I've been guilty of any of those mistakes. For the most part, I'm innocent (if that term applies here), except that I leapt into publishing my first Hub before I really studied the rules and practices of the community. Call it enthusiasm and impulsiveness if you like.
Now that I've published more Hubs (though nowhere as prolific as many other Hubbers, yourself included), I think I've learned the ropes. I'm not expecting to "get rich quick" on HP...good thing, too, since my average earnings are too skimpy to even reveal.
I do enjoy the HP community and the diversity of talents displayed here. I follow some writers routinely and eagerly, yet I also Hub Hop enough to find others that might have escaped my notice. I've even made some friends in this very generous community. We all share a commonality: we like to write and want others to read our scribings (is that even a word?)....
Thanks for this Hub, which I've voted UP, USEFUL and INTERESTING.
Regards, JayeWisdom
P.S. I'm most impressed with the huge number of followers you've gained as well as the large volume of comments your Hubs engender.
An extremely useful and helpful hub. I've made quite a few of these mistakes myself. My very first hub was written as a blog, until I realized that that's not how Hubpages operates. Then I had to fix it up. :D
Thanks for writing this. I am relatively new to HubPages and am sure I am making some of these mistakes. Pieces like this help to make it easier to adapt to the site and learn the best ways to go about the writings.
Honestly, I have no idea to what ends this site intends to achieve by our attempts at writing. The hubs that get the most attention are the ones that enjoy simple provocative statements that seldom have any real data. If I do anything on here I am usually hoping to find out what topics actually generate real interest. In most cases I like being in the middle somewhere and hope to generate additional opinions based on real substance. Being unbiased based on true opinions of writing and topics that inform both the reader and the writer with real information should be the goal. In other instances a wonderful story works just as well.
Hope all newbies read this it's for their own good...
Hello Cagsil, constructive and informative Hub.
Thank You for sharing voted up.
Hey Ray, I don't consider myself a newbie now, but boy, found this hub helpful. I tiptoed on your page to find your hubs on 'Women Writers In HubPages Community' and bumped into this one in the mean time. I am going to write a creative profile today, and always proof read my work, just as you have advised. Lets hope I can get to your 'women writers' hubs, its hard skipping past your titles without having a read...
Voted up and awesome! You have touched on some great points this is very useful for hubpages writers.
I'm not all that new to hubpages myself, but I not only appreciated your outline here for new hubbers, but loved all the additional hubs you linked to as resources. The mistakes you mentioned - I'm pretty sure I happened to make every single one of them in my adventures here, so this is a great reminder for me personally. Thank you. Well done.
Voting up and passing it on.
This is a great guide for new users, and gave me some background, and a great review of information every hubber should be aware of. You also pointed out ways not to be a nuisance on HP, and that is greatly appreciated. Great Hub!!
Great teaching. I am very interested in knowing the rules and understanding everything before I do. I could not resist reading this article and it was indeed very useful. Thanks and Voted Up for great information.
Thank you so much - you are absolutely right!! I was (correction: am) an excited newbie, and I initially got the gist of what hubpages are about when I discovered this site, but this article really brought clarity to some of the subtle differences that are not immediately evident when exploring the various hubs. I'm sure I will be referring back to this article several times in the coming weeks :)
Once again, I am glad I hopped and found you. I came onto this site over a year ago, wrote a hub (whatever that was back then) which I was lucky was just above a blog. I did want to get rich quickly and was very guilty of thinking this community was some sort of a social site, thank goodness I was not feeling too friendly. Your hub gave me a lot of answers to questions I had about HP but was too lazy to find out. So, let me thank you for doing the work for me (and a lot of other newbies.) One of my favorite people says experience is the best teacher, of fools. I am glad I have taken the other route to wisdom by sitting at your feet and just learning. I am going to read your other hubs for newbies. I take myself as a newbie as I do not yet fully understand or know the ropes here. To be honest, I felt reprimanded when I read this and so my first step is to take a look at my profile and adjust, I know it needs that. lol.
Great Hub, I understand what you are trying to say, I think the same. I'm new to HubPages, and I'm trying to get published. I have a little (or bigger) problem with the correct grammar writhing, bcs English is not my native language, and that's way this job is a bit difficult. I'm hoping that I'm not that bad, and if I am I'm willing to learn... Thx for your helpfull advices.
This should be required reading for new hubbers, and for many of the old timers, too! The information is absolutely essential! I'm sure this hub will maintain its 100 rating for a very long time!
Great advice for new members like myself. Thank you!
Awesome hub and advice. I've been on Hubpages for just about 2 weeks now, and I am still learning a lot every day about what is and is not good in a hub. Thank you.
It is funny how you state that grammar is an issue to watch out for, while admitting you do it, and say that you should always proofread before posting. My question is, did you in fact proof this hub? Because I found several grammatical errors in just the first couple of paragraphs, which is all I could stomach since it is so hypocritical. I am glad you were not the first person I read or heard from on here, I may have left and never returned.
Spoken from someone who has been here all of five days. I envy you your ability to wish her a nice day.
Great, thorough hub! I think you left something out lol joking :)
Definitely had to learn the hard way a few of these things. And since I'm still new I know there's much more for me to learn. Thankfully I did quickly understand this is not a social site and the need for helpful, not social content.
Very helpful Hub; as a newbie I appreciate your straightforward approach to this subject.
What a great guide for new hubbers! Just going through this hub can provide all the learning needed to survive and succeed in Hubpages. I had no idea that the way with which I ask questions, make answers and post comments have great impact on the hubscore. Thanks for writing such an informative hub for the newbies.
I wish this had been around when I first came to Hubpages. I have been here a while and I still learned something. Thank you!
Great Hub, Cagsil. You have touched on many of the things that irk me most about online blogs, hubs, and independent article submission sites. So many people do not edit for grammar, spelling, punctuation, or any of the other common errors one would find in writing and expect to be fixed prior to running their work in print. I know that I far from perfect in this area, however I do strive to review and edit all of my work before I post it.
I am definitely bookmarking this Hub to refer back to as I continue on my path with HP. Voted up +Useful, +Interesting, +Awesome. I would recommend this to any new HP member, such as myself, as a must-read!
hubpages needs more well-organized and thought out articles like this, thank you
Very informative. I'm glad I read this.
Thanks for this, very useful :)
I find a lot of new users have this self fish mindset where they would post a hub and hope people will read and comment but they will not recipicate. Hubpages is a community. "We write together.....we learn together"
I found this very useful. I joined a little over a year ago. I wrote a few hubs December of 2010 and then started a new project...building a website. Took me a year to build that website, so that is where my mind has been. Along with taking care of a child with health problems. My failure is that I need to put more into hubpages. I would like to make more time for it now when I can. It's funny that today was the first day in over a year that I went to explore hubs and this one jumped out at me. ha.
This is one of the valuable hub, a newcomer can come across. Really appreciate the efforts you put in framing this hub. I will make sure I don't commit any of these.
Thanks for this hubs.very useful for new members.goes to my bookmark collection.
Thank you for the great input on what NOT to do! As a newbie myself, I am learning what affects our scores, how to engage others, what styles are appropriate for gaining traffic and which are not, while staying true to my original intent to publish hubs about certain subjects. Thank you for these tips that can help me to improve even more!
Wishes I had this sort of information when I started out with Hubpages. It was just a baby way back then
Good hub, thanks for sharing. There was so much useful info here!
Thanks for sharing your insights on this subject. I'm a new Hubber & a little slow in getting my wheels turning--but your hub reinforces my thinking that it's better to be slow & thorough than to jump in & not know what you're doing. Articles like yours have been very helpful to me.
Thank you for this-I just joined and put a lot of time and effort into my first hub. Now I'm hoping with these tips to keep moving forward. Cheers!
Wow, this is a lot of information to digest. I already made a newbie mistake in a comment I posted by not reading all the information. I really wanted to share book reviews but am now wondering if this is not the forum for them as my book reviews are usually kind of short. Hmmmm, I'm going to have to give this some more thought and do more research on writing hubs. Thanks for the information!
Hi Cagsil
I have bookmarked this one.
Voted up and awesome.
Been on HubPages for awhile but it's aways a good idea to refresh yourself on the rules, etc. Thanks for compiling everything we need to know in 1 hub!
Hi Cagsil, Very good and informative hubs. I guess now I need to do something about my Profile. Since joining 3+months ago, I have not changed it at all. My initial write-up needs amendment now. Thanks for reminding.
woaza! Very well structured and informative. I really think all the links for the TOS and such was a great idea :)
Very useful information presented here. Thanks. Wish I had read it a while ago but still, better late than never. Voted up and useful.
By reading your Hub I realize that I have done things right and that reassures me. Even though I haven't made money out of my Hubbing, I know I have above average quality and I have been smart enough to use Hubpages properly, despite the fact that English is my second language.
Thanks so much for ALL the useful information, tips, links.
Just a great Hub.
Bookmarked, voted up and useful.
Thanks
Thank You, for writing this hub. I am somewhat new here and still learning. It's great you told us not what to do.Thanks Again!
Thank you for this Hub. I am very new here and it answers many of my unanswered questions. There are some things I have to learn.
Thank you for this hub.I joined just two weeks ago and have had major issues trying to get my first hub published. It all started out because I was trying to move my website here from another host and so I was going to make each section of my other website a hub. I just wanted to share all that I had done and wanted it moved before deleting the other site. It made sense to me. But because the other website wasn't eliminated yet, my "hubs" were duplicates. Well, I wrote and rewrote my main hub and deleted all the others. I got notice that there were NO violations, so I tried to publish my hub. I got notice that is was substandard and duplicate work. No matter what I did, I got those warnings. My hub was well over 500 words.
Finally, out of frustration, I copied the hub and put it in a new hub and deleted the old hub. Guess what!
I got published! So sometimes when you hit a glitch it remains a glitch and you have to solve it differently. Had I read this hub before I tried to move my website over, I would have realized that my plans were not going to work. I would have saved a couple of weeks! Thanks again, for this hub. It is quite helpful.
I am a new hubber, very useful for me.
Awesome advice, Cagsil! I agree with all of them, especially mistaking HP for a personal blogging site and not taking the time to learn how to use the site.
Voted up, awesome and shared! :)
I have made so many mistakes you mentioned above. So i'll surely bookmark this hub to read as a guide. It's nice to have members like you that are very observant. Thanks for a great hub.
Great hub Cagsil! You've really hit it right on the spot. I did learn from my past mistakes. I'm sure this will be of great help to new users.
This is a great hub Cagsil. You've really hit it right on the spot. This will definitely help new users and avoid doing the above mentioned mistakes.
Great hub for a newbie! I'm bookmarking this one. Thanks for the help you have giving me here at hubpages!
First of all thank you for this hub. I loved it and as a new hubber it helped me a lot and i know it will help a lots of new hubber and other guys. Can you just suggest me aboub pictures. I need pictures for my hub and last day one of my hub has flagged inappropriate for its picture from another page. Can you please suggest me how could i get some free and paid pictures for my hub.
And really thanks for this hub.
Thank You Casgil, great hub. After reading this, it reassures that I am doing the right thing by taking my time and making sure that my first hub won't have too many mistake when I go to publish it.
Thanks, This is one useful Hub. To get to the place to comment I had to hop a jet!The previous comments were that extensive.
Thankyou for such a complete list of the 10 most common mistakes made by new members. It wouldn't hurt for "seasoned" members to read this as well. I will link this to a couple of HP articles I've written.
Great stuff here. This will help to make us all winners here on Hubpages. Most grateful - vocalcoach
My internet connection had some errors when I posted my first comment. I thought it didn't register. =)
My apologies.
A really well set out and informative hub!
Good stuff, #10 certainly applies to just about anything you do in life :)
I'm a newbie here, but took a good couple weeks to poke around here before finally making the decision to use HubPages vs. other sites. Then took a couple more weeks to collect enough information for my first series of articles.
That being said, I'm sure I'll make plenty newbie mistakes anyway.
I read as many hubs as I could find here on Hubpages, in reference to advice for newbies, before I wrote any hubs of my own. This was the best of any of them and should be read by all. Concise, to the point, layed out well, and enjoyable reading. Thank you both for your advice and for sharing your writing here.
Thanks for the well-written, insightful page. As a new hubber, I really appreciate how willing to share their knowledge many veteran hubbers are.
Great Hub for those who are new. It is definitely a learning process. It requires diligence, patience and reading other successful hubs, commenting etc. I am glad you brought up the one's that post dumb questions like a blog post. I often wondered. After reading in the forum, I have learned a lot. I really like the fact that hubbers step in and answer questions that I have asked. I still have things to learn. There is always room for improvement. Thanks again!
Well put! Can we add this to the help and basic rules section. :)
Well done for creating an information rich and beneficial article hub publishers.
I came across this hub accidentally and I am certainly thankful that I did. I was trying to introduce a friend to HubPages and while explaining it, his questions were: “How much money will I make?”, “Can I meet chicks on there?”, and “Can I use it as a blog?” I finally told him that Hubpages wasn’t for him because he had the wrong mind set. I immediately sent him your hub about the common mistakes. Maybe if he reads from another Hubber that it’s not a social networking site, nor is it a “get rich quick” scheme, he will change his point of view and grow up! Thank you for posting this, it was great advice and very to the point. Voted up and everything else!
This is very useful for beginners, to bed it wasn't around when I started. But even now I have learned something.
This is the most infomative hub to learn hub writing ,that I have read. Thanks for all the links to learn more.
Accept my gratitude Cagsil for sharing this wonderful hub. I will say that this is a one-stop-learning article for hubbers especially to newbie like me. I bookmarked this hub, marked it useful and awesome! Voted up!
Cagsil, this is one of the most valuable, well-thought-out hubs I've ever read. Thank you so much for taking the time. Though I am no longer a newbie, there are bound to be some fine points that I've missed...HubPages, afterall, is a very big new world and takes some time to learn. This hub is a great asset to all of us. Voted VERY up and useful.
Hi, I wish I had read a hub that explained it all so well as this when I started, I have spent many a time going back over hubs to correct things such as photos, layout and just about everything else. The one thing that I am always forgetting to do is update my profile, so this is the next thing on my agenda! this is so useful, rated up! cheers nell
Uh oh, I hope I haven't broken any rules or that those English teachers don't report me to the spelling and grammar police. All kidding aside, this is a great hub with loads of useful information that is easy to understand. Well done!
Excellent Hub! As a newcomer, I wish I had read this sooner. I made plenty of mistakes simply by failing to learn the ins and outs of Hubpages before I dived in.
After publishing my first HubPages, I thought there's not much to learn about writing in HubPages. After reading your article, I began to understand that there's so much to learn if ever I would like to spend time "Hubbing." Learning one topic every day makes learning worthwhile and your article gave me the incentive to write more HubPages. HubPaging is a learning experience for me and I will keep your article in mind every HubPage I make. Thanks for sharing that article. I owe you a cup of coffee! Is it decaf or regular :-)?
I could see how alot of thiese things could easily be looked over. I know when I first started out here, i immediately jumped in, but I was writing on another site before that and hoonestly hesitated when I came here if I wanted to take on another site. I have to say, I didn't learn the in's and out's until much later. I guess it would have been beneficial to learn right away!
Quite Brilliant. Exactly what everyone needs to know AND remember for good hubbing not blogging.
Thank you, take care
Great hub Ray even for those of us who have been around awhile. I remember when I first started and would see hubs that were two paragraphs about what someone did the past weekend. That would drive me crazy. I do think the whole hubber vs. blogger thing has gotten better, or maybe things are just being flagged more quickly. I can say with no doubt that even though I've been around HP going on one year now, there is still lots to learn. Thank goodness for people like you Ray that are so willing to help others.
Sharyn
A truly excellent and informative, Cagsil; you'll be lucky if HP doesn't put it in the learning center. :)
If I may add a final thought though - writing for money on the net is not like writing an english paper or a letter to the editor. You may well have covered this in another hub (I haven't looked at your other guides for newbies yet), but there is an awful lot of learning to do before seeing much in the way of earnings and it's not all about learning to write on HP. It's about learning how to please an internet searcher and search engines.
Very well done - my hat's off to you.
Oh, you are absolutely correct; if you write on HP you really need to be able to do it right. Know the rules, know what you can expect from HP and all the various bells and whistles here. You've done a great job starting someone out in that respect.
I just feel bad for so many newbies that write 50 hubs, expecting some income, and don't get any because they aren't writing for the web. They don't know any better; don't even know what to ask or have any inkling of what is wrong, and don't realize that there is a next step to take.
Where were you three years ago? I could have avoided sooooo many newbie mistakes if I'd had this hub to guide me. I am serious here. This is incredibly useful and should be required reading for all hubbers.
MM
P.S. Probably about time I read the forum rules, eh?
lol
I know, hon. I was teasing you. I know you weren't here 3 years ago.
Actually, I'm afraid to read the forum rules. I am afraid it will jinx me and cause me to get banned :P.
Excellent hub, tho. And I will read the one on forum rules. Somehow, in my sick and twisted mind, that would be safe:-).
Best. Always. To my hubber friend. MM
Wow! Thanks for taking the time to write this post. I created a hubpages account several years ago, and posted duplicate content and didn't put much time into my account either. Sadly, I was trying to use it for link-building. Fast forward a few years...I've learned a lot about content on the web and get frustrated by those who use the same tactics that I used to use. This time around I'm spending more time reading, learning, and writing unique content. I'll definitely re-visit this post as I grow my hubpages account. Thanks again!
A very indepth consideration that I found extrememly insightful and direct. Good food for thought so we don't waste time!
Reiterates I have a lot to learn as a newbie!
Very Nice! We are here to learn from each other and make some great connections and most of all, make some decent money and have fun.
Thank you for this valuable information. I will use it and review my work so far and make changes as needed. I appreciate the guidance. I've been with HP for a year now, but just now am getting active, so I consider myself a newbie.
Hey Cags, your hub brought back memories when I was a newbie. I basically wrote my first hub without reading much of the FAQ and HP rules. Thankfully, it didn't lead me to a lot of trouble :). Hope the newbies will read this but unfortunately (and you have to admit) even the old ones still make the same mistakes. thanks for the hub. Voted up.
Hi, you mention changing your profile. Maybe I should work on that. Dont' think I've ever changed anything on that. I like to see familiar avatars when I first look at comments. It tells me right away who I am "talking to". I personally don't like it when a Hubber changes their avatar. Then I don't recognize them. Another of my pet peeves are Hubbers with LONG handles; takes too long to respond to them by name. I've bookmarked this Hub so I can go back and reread. Many thanks for all the good info I voted this UP, etc.etc.
Very detailed and informative advice for new hubbers. I made more than a few mistakes at the start (but, nothing serious thankfully). As you mentioned, the excitement of getting involved kind of takes over initially, especially when you start to get readers. Hence, it would be very good for all new members to read through this!
Will be SOCIALLY SHARING, as hopefully it will help prevent some new members having problems and may help to raise Hubpages up as the quality site that it is.
l was just about to jump into my first article this evening, finish it and publish. Now after reading this l will take my time and look throught the Hubpages tutorials. Thank you for an informative and well put together article.
Excellent list of consise and simple rules not only for newbies but a good reminder for vets...cheers and thanks
nice hub :)
So well spoken! So clear ! Thank You! I am still trying to get used to the new format of where to find things! It use to be in my opinion easier without drop down menu!
Great Hub. Being a beginner this would help me a lot. Thank you.
This is really a soft and strict eyeopener!! Thanks for the hub.
Hi
Just wanted to say thank you for this article. As a new writer here I've been trying to read as many helpful posts as possible to help me get started, and yours is particularly good. I'm going to have to have a long think about the English spelling issue, being English myself. Should I use an American spell check? You've really spun me out with that one!
But thanks though. It's good to be aware of these potential issues.
Ethan
Required reading!
Thank you for this. I'm fairly new to Hubpages so this has served as a useful reminder. Appreciate it :-)
I'm very new to Hub Pages I think you've just saved me a bunch of time ... Thanks !!
I'm a new member and these tips are awesome! So helpful! Thanks for all your help!
Thanks for this extremely informative hub. I really wish there was more attention paid to ensuring quality hubs, especially with regard to proper grammar and spelling. Everyone makes mistakes, but I've been shocked to read so many hubs that are lacking in the basics.
As a new hubber, I will say that it's very enticing to skip over learning some of the basics, and it's something I need to spend more time on. Thanks for the motivation!
Cagsi aka Ray, Thank you very much for the useful tips. I have been a member for one year now, but I am still learning more and more each day, especially from hubs like yours. Voted up and sharing.
This is well written and very informative, I would call it a "Must Read" for new members.
Thank you, this was just what I needed as a newbie. Straight forward no beating about the bush. Vote up and Awesome. Thank you especially defining the difference between "Hubbing" and "Blogging and "Social Networking".
You mentioned Google Adsense. Hub pages suggests not applying with Adsense until you have built up content. Do you know how much content, and how long you should hub before you apply for Adsense?
I've only recently begun to tweak my profile as you suggest. I wonder if treating it as a hub would help (at least in the amount of time spent working on what needs to be said.) I also feel the need to go back through the learning center, even repeating what I've already read. There is still much I do not know about HubPages. Thanks for your insight and the resources you have provided.
Than you for having a good and informative hub. I think everyone must read this especially those beginners in hub pages.
When I joined I have gone through each and every rules and regulation and documentation of hubpages. I am very cautious in writing any article. For me quality is more important then quantity and I will stick with it. I understand hubpages and committed to it. Thanks for sharing.
Very helpful for beginners ..why I had not discovered this hub when I was starting at hubpages ..Nice information
Thank you for this information. At least I would be more aware of the rules when I write and publish articles in hubpages.
I thought I post another comment. Great information. Well done! I have taken the liberty of rating it up, and sharing it with my Followers...
In my opinion, point six used to apply to me, but then I learned that I would have to add the effort to see any sort of valuable results! Whilst I am fully prepared to take on the level of hard work that this may require, I am still slightly confused as to what work is involved except writing high quality hubs...
Hey Cags, you really are an asset to Hubpages! What a great hub this is. Rewriting my bio will be first on my TO-DO list.
Thank you!
I found this difficult to read because of the grammar and sentence structure.
I was reading and at the same time looking around if anyone is watching. This is because, I could not imagine how much I have overlooked what you have mentioned. Right away, I am heading for the rules of writing and the FAQS. I want to be on track. Voted up and very useful!
This is a truely useful hub, especially for new members like me, who've been stumbling in the dark. I also thought of publishing some of my articles from other websites on HP (thinking of it as my original work), but I won't do that now. Thank you for the enlightening guildlines and tips. :)
thanks for this its very helpful
wow! as a newbie here it was very helpful. It not only gave me idea about hubpages but gave me a overview of how to write. Thanks a bunch. I have to check in my profile and hubs to make them better :)
Thank you
My pleasure :)
Great hub, you are a great writer, even though that statement is obvious based on your fan base and the number of comments you achieve, I thought to say it because your structure and prose make obtaining important information and data easy. Thanks for the lesson, school is in session. Cheers F.
Thanks for all these beginner tips. For some reason I always have trouble with #8. I have no trouble writing about most topics, but when it comes to writing about myself, I always draw a huge blank.
This is very useful indeed! I am a newbie here and I must admit, I am guilty of some of the issues enumerated in your hub. Thanks for the reminder. I review my profile as well as the few hubs I have posted and do the necessary modifications. Again, thanks so much.
This isn't the first time I've come across an excellent hub you've written, Cagsil. Your work is always very lengthy and informative. I'm studying those at the top today to learn from the ones who are succeeding. You are at the very top with this hub right now under the HOT category. Congratulations on that! I'm sure it was hard work and lots of time invested to write the high quality of articles you do. I always enjoy reading yours even though we see things differently a lot of the time.
Thanks for the very informative hub Cagsil, although I looked at the rules and such, but it was more of a quick read at the end of a hard day. Obviously I missed a few things, such as watermarks.
I'm pretty new and I feel like this Hub was written just for me. I know I have a lot to learn, but I'm willing to do it and you've given me a great start here. Thank you so much for the help!
I absolutley love this hub. I am new to Hub and learned a lot about what I need to do to be a valuable Hub member.
Hi Raymond. So glad to know all these. I'll try my best to avoid any of them. I may have joined 3 years ago but I'm still a newbie as I only started submitting for hubpages seriously this year. Along with the rules, guidelines and documents together with your helpful and very friendly tips, I'll be able to master all the ins and outs of hubpages. THANK YOU and all the BEST.
I am new to HubPages and have found myself making some of these mistakes. I already posted my first Hub and I have not even perfected my profile. But I will keep all of these tips in mind and begin to use HubPages the way that it is meant to be used. Thank you for the wonderful advice!
Honestly speaking, I didn't get the first mistake (mentioned). I've seen a lot of hubs containing less than 500 words, most probably by senior hubbers. Why should you make a lengthy hub, when there is no need at all? Simply doing what others do, doesn't make you any different. After all, readers on internet prefer "short and sweet" and not lengthy History pages. Nobody has time. You got to cooperate with them.
you are 100% right , how it look like top ten in mistakes ,
You scratch my hub I'll scratch yours!LOL
Well done. Thanks for the valuable insight. Even though I have been a member for a while, I have not put effort in it, hopefully soon I will find time to master everything. Thanks again.
I am two weeks old here on hubpages with 20 hubs published. I don't know if my profile is the best example as you would recommend. I will keep hub hopping to find other examples that i can copy. This was an informative hub. The number of comments tell it all. It is my dream to one day elicit 100 times more reaction to my hubs, compared to this hub. Thank you for being a mentor to new comers.

This is wonderful, Raymond aka Cagsil. I researched the site before joining up, including checking out the rules and regulation. I think I missed or overlooked the watermarking one, but it was a quick fix and I moved on. I haven't had any hiccups besides that one.
The one thing I've been working on is my profile. When I first joined not so long ago, I didn't have much up there. I'm still not sure if it's enough or descriptive enough. I wonder if a professional checked my profile out, would they be interested or just move along? Maybe you can give a gal some advice or at least write a hub about it. It's the one area on this list where I still feel like I'm still making newbie mistakes.
Such an insightful hub. Useful, awesome and voted up!
