Why Ask Questions? Why Ask Why?
Welcome Citizen of Humanity,
Yes, the welcome was done on purpose and with purpose. The main explanation of "Why ask questions? or better yet "Why ask why?" is strictly my perspective. Things as they are seen and explained. I will not use any particular philosophy. You might be able to apply some others(philosophy) to what I say, but make no mistake- I am not nor have I ever been a student of philosophy and hold nothing more than a high school education. For many years I've been told by others, I am wise beyond my years. I only use knowledge(including experience), which includes all emotional connections, which I learned from.
I asked myself this specific question- why ask why? It's truly a brain-wrenching thought. But, it boils down to a couple of things which work in combination. Why do we ask questions? Well, to be honest, a person asks a question for several reasons (a) to learn, (b) to gauge reaction, (c) to attempt reason and/or (d) increase awareness. Sometimes, it's all of the above.
Why ask why?
Seriously, ask yourself, why do you ask questions? What purpose does your questions serve? Do your questions somehow improve your life? Does it help in understanding your life? Will the question improve your character, as a person once uttered?
What is at the end of the road of why ask why? It makes one come to the realization that all questions have an answer. Every question will enable you to expand your mind and give you a complete understanding of life itself. Many questions are formed based on the "need" to know. There's some knowledge that is critical, extremely vital for living life and then there are some questions which have absolutely no reason to be answered. Wisdom comes in knowing which questions should be answered and the need for it to be answered. If there's no "need" behind it, then it shouldn't matter to how you live your life.
The "Need" To Know?
Usually when people ask a question, it generally comes from the "need" to know. As I said above, sometimes there isn't a "need" to know and people can live without a question being answered because it has no real baring on their life. They can still manage to continue living without the question ever being answered. Then again, there are times where some questions get answered, but the answer isn't accepted. Why not? Because of that person's ego and nothing more.
They will tell you they "need" to know, but actually they have no real "need" whatsoever to know. They are just attempting to be difficult because they have recognized the truth of your words, but refuse to accept the answer. Now, to make it simple for you- all answers that can be are formed from truth which is completely rational, sane and based on wisdom(discerned truth). Which should tell you something about questions. All questions have answers, but at certain times the answers to certain questions are in fact that the question has no need to ever be answered and that's the truthful answer.
Truthful Answers Come From Wisdom
Whenever a question is asked and answered, the question is either answer via (a) best guess(beliefs-opinion), (b) facts, or (c) truth(wisdom). If you answer a question based on what you believe(beliefs you have established for yourself which become your opinion), then you are not being honest, unless you actually state that it's a belief(or opinion). Meaning you are giving someone your best guess based on your faith and belief in yourself. It doesn't mean it's actual truth.
There are some questions that can be answered via facts. Facts are those theories(hypothesis) which are accumulated to form all knowable knowledge available. Example: Gravity is a theory, which is a known fact to most of the world and according to knowable knowledge available makes it a fact, regardless of what anyone wants to claim. Yes, the scientific community has had many things in which have been found to be wrong, but that doesn't necessarily make everything knowable wrong. Everything that is knowable is connected together through many different processes and if one of them is wrong, then things wouldn't work as we know them to work.
Thank you for your time.

I appreciated your thoughts on the validity of questioning as part of the human experience. Keep up the good work.
Your piece is very thought-provoking and having an interest in philosophy it has set me to ponder How can we not?
If you've ever converesed with children it would appear that WHY is a part of our human make-up, they'll ask why to every answer until you skillfully shift the conversation.
The need to know seems natural and I believe the answers come when you're ready, when you've reached that place of understanding. A 4yr old may ask "How is water made? but unless he or she is a genius your chemistry explanation would not be understood. We develop in stages. With that said I do agree that all questions have answers.
I will agree that some unanswered questions will not hinder day-to-day living but thoughts do come unbidden, demand your attention and sometimes refuse to be ousted.
You mentioned the need to know is oft times ego-based but sometimes it's from this place that the universal opens if one is willing to see themelves as a part of something bigger.
Regarding WISDOM, how do you acquire it except by knowledge, which one questions; understanding which is answered questions; and gnosis which is answer to a question you didn't realize was there, or an answer that needed no lengthy investigation after the question came up?
Some people are like driftwood, they banter along a river without an enquiry. This is perfect and right for them at that given moment in time. It is not until they experience a wave that knocks them that they seek meaning. Again this is perfect and right.
Others seek meaning and whilst they seek, they lose the focus. This is perfect and right for them. It isnt until they see driftwood that they ask why and it isnt until they try being like driftwood they will understand.
Life is for living and if you live it you will have thae answers you seek (or not!)
xx
Very nice write up! In defence of those who answer questions based upon belief...we all do that, and most often the person asking us already knows well that our answer will be based in belief X or even, if you will, lack of belief Y.
I want to start my comment with an observation of myself. I have noticed that some questions need not be asked or (more personally) they annoy the hell out of me. Eg. some questions asked in the "questions and answer" section of HP.
Knowing that about myself, I have come to the realization that questions that are relevant to me are questions that offer (in the answer) knowledge on some level, whether it be to enhance my life, alter my life, offer growth on some level...but must always offer some fact or wisdom in the answer.
If I ask "why", it must be because my life on some level depends on it. I want to know if the answer to "why" will affect me negatively or, better yet, positively. So any question that I do ask must be a "need to to know" thing, not a "want to know" which is where the ego comes in.
Random questions asked out of nosiness or curiosity only serve to waste my time and offer no real meaning.

Happy holidays Cagsil and may the season bring you joy and peace.

Cagsil... something remarkable - you really need to see this: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1138760474
Can you see the link between my friend in the UK and this article? It is as if God is communicating from afar. We are connected, we are one in the spirit. Look for the signs and our prayers are always answered :)
I agree with what you said, "your best guess based on your faith and belief in yourself. It doesn't mean it's actual truth." It is true that in this world we deal with perceptions of reality. When they don't match it boils down to differing perceptions. thanks!
I will read that! Thanks
Take a look at your picture in this hub. Take a look at my friend's avatar picture. I love how the universe works! hehehe
Like I said... I love how the universe works :)
Asking why must not be mistaken as basic as breathing, but as complex as the physics of breathing.;-))
Hi Cagsil
A very interesting and thought provoking hub.
In my job, there are employees who ask why. I tell them why but they keep asking why hoping that my answer will change.
Voted up and interesting.
They just don't want to accept the answer. :-)
Your impact is good and I look forward to reading more of your hubs. :-)
Who do you think asks more questions, men or women? I wonder how many questions on average people who don't really want an answer will ask in a single day? Is there such a thing as a stupid question? I wonder if we had better facts upon which we base our knowledge on, could things then work better than they do today?
Hello Cagsil,
This was enjoyable to read and the comments too..I am more of a "how" person..most of the time the why answers are not what we want to hear and we are hoping the answer will be different the second time around. Sometimes I really dont want to know why..just tell me how it works..lol Example: My chickens stopped laying eggs for two days..I dont want to know why?? I want to know how to get them to lay again, I need eggs like yesterday!lol :)
Thank you again,
Sunnie
That is my downfall Cagsil I jump!..If I googled it.. I would type..how do you get chickens to lay that have stopped laying?..I probibly wouldnt ask why did they stop laying..I guess it is all in how someone seeks answers. Now my husband would ask why and find out the resaons why they may have stopped. I would already be outside doing this or that attempting to solve the issue.May be a character flaw on my part..lol
Well I just checked the chicken coop and found four wonderful eggs..so I did have to google the how or why..hahaha Have a good night! :)
You have mastered the art of double talk!
I understand what you're saying. I know people ask questions that aren't important and usually they do it, in some cases, for chit chatting. Other times they do it for other reasons.
But if the person is not up for chit chatting, well that's a different story.
Great hub. Voted up! care and share info world now. (feel the force)
I believe that there are no stupid questions. In fact I don't even like the word 'stupid'! Good discussions here.

Most often I ask questions to learn. I consider myself a lifelong student. I'm not sure that "Why" is the question I ask the most often. Probably "How?" is the question I ask the most often.
