Erica Durance was born in Calgary to a truck driver, Joel, and librarian, Gail, Durance grew up with an older brother and sister on a turkey farm in Three Hills, Alberta. After school, she moved to Vancouver to start her acting career, which has primarily included low-budget horror films and guest roles on sci-fi TV shows.

In 2006, she and Jeph Loeb co-hosted the WWC: Sam Loeb College Scholarship Fund Charity Auction with all the proceeds going to the Sam Loeb College Scholarship Fund at the Wizard World convention in Chicago. The auction raised $72,000 and Erica also refused the offer of $15,000 for her appearance, and instead donated the money towards the auction and did the event for free.
