The Past, The Present or The Future- Which Controls Your View?

The Past, The Present or The Future?
Welcome reader,
You are not here by accident. It was not destiny either. It wasn't by chance or luck either. What brought you to this specific space, at this specific time was just idle human nature. The past, the present or the future - which controls your view is an amateur writer's insight into what makes you tick.
Yes, what makes you tick as a person. If you do not realize that you and your view is precisely your problem, then hopefully by the time you are done reading, you'll have come to that self realization and will actually want to do something about it.
Personally, I have no vested interest in what you do or how you live your life or even how you view your life, because in the end, it is your problem, one which, I have no say in. Change is a wonderful thing and should you feel it is necessary to hold in your present status, then I can only say that I am saddened that you would think that.
Change - the unknown and unpredictable....
Regardless of what you might think, change happens every day, even if you do not see it happen. The unknown and unpredictable nature of change comes without warning and often blindsides those who it affect/effects.
The "unknown" is unpredictable, in and of, itself, which causes fear in many people. When someone does not know something or lacks knowledge about such a thing, then most often than not, they fear it. This is human nature and is not worth your worry or fret.
The Past, the Present or the Future - Which controls your view is a simple explanation about yourself and what is in your best interest. Now you might be wondering (a) how would you(me) know what is in my(you) best interest? and (b) who do you(me) think you are?
Well, let's address the latter than the former, so as to get the easiest questions answers first. Who do you(me) think you are? I am not prophet, if that's what you're tending towards. I am not a scholar or a philosopher, if your thinking is in that direction. I am not a "know-it-all" either.
Many understand and many are lost....
Since I am none of the above, the only available option left is that I AM a human being, with a unique understanding, for which, I presently call- wisdom of life. Many laugh at what I have to say and many dismiss my words, but the message conveyed is to still remain, etch in their thoughts whether or not they like it.
I am not part of the educated elite of the world nor do I want or strive to be part of that world. The educated elite have proven they are not worthy of spit, much less anything else. They do more harm to others than they commit of value. They destroy and cause destruction more than those who are not so well educated. Therefore, it proves they lack a moral value and possess a lack of knowledge and wisdom about life.
Am I better than these people? I would certainly hope so, considering I do not damage my life and I do not damage the life of others. But, at the end of the day, it only proves that I understand and that they are lost. Therefore, I am not better than them, but only seem to be.
The Past, The Present or The Future....
You live in one of the past, the present or the future and it is your view that control your life. The past- a time you have lived through and experienced, for which, you gained knowledge and hopefully wisdom. Not everyone gains wisdom.
The present- the here and now, the moment at which is a relative, because time continues regardless of actions or thoughts. It is fleeting to say the least and most people have a view that presents the present within a certain time frame. The present to some is about living for a specific moment and making the best of that moment while it lasts. To some, it's not relevant because they are not bothering to look at it all. To others, it's just a matter of perspective or perception and is left at that alone.
The future- is unknown to most, because they cannot see two feet in front of their face, much less one day down the road or 10 years further. The future to some is a scary place, due to the fact that they have the uncanny ability to see the path being walked and where it ends up.
Your view.....
The simple fact that many people do not realize that their own view hinders their ability to live their life, borders on the line of being absurd. If you have a negative view, then you will see only negative things. Therefore you will have a closed or narrow mind as to things, which will limit your individual ability to make changes or to see changes coming.
If you have a positive view, then you will be more open minded toward things as they happen and will be able to use your abilities to handle certain negative situations as they come, because you'll end up seeing the positive aspect for which you were to gain from it. An open mind allows for growth and expansion of oneself, while a closed or narrow mind eliminates growth and brings on stagnation.
Living in the past.....
Living in the past happens to some people and yet they do not even realize it is happening to them. It's almost absurd to think about, but the truth of the matter is that if you look around at the people around you and pay attention to them, you can see it in their actions. Especially, those who you interact with on a daily basis, such as family and friends, and even associates at work.
These people constantly bring up things that have happened to themselves, as though it matters at this specific point in time. They fail to notice it is not connected nor have they properly learned how to deal with whatever issues they refuse to let go of.
Those who talk about "in my experience" that's not how things work, show you their open ignorance about life and also appear to lack sufficient amounts of wisdom to move on forward with their life. Some people have been victims of such things as rape or torture or scams, and they continue to harp on it or dwell. They seem to have the inability to realize it actually took place, which is a shock effect that can last for a lifetime, if not properly handled.
Living in the present.....
Living in the present is about the here and now. Making the best of the situation you are in right at this particular moment, but the moment doesn't last long enough to be lived in, because in a short span, it becomes the past. So, it is a futile attempt to control one's view.
What you did five minutes ago is already the past. Did you make the best of that span of time? What exactly did you do to make the best of that time?
Spend time with friends, do a project with a family member, play a game, go to work, go to the store or something that did nothing to enhance your life.
Living in the future......
This very concept might escape the average person, because as I said earlier, most cannot see two feet in front of their face, much less anything else. Living in the future is about planning for your future, seeing the path your life is on and evaluating it's direction, and determining if the path you're on is really going to give your life value that you want, need or desire.
You should be living in the future. You should be seeing your future via your imagination and making the images you need, want or desire, to become part of your life. If you do nothing about what you truly need, want or desire, then you will have wasted your life living with a view that controlled you, instead of you controlling your life.
The future is not unknown as many like to believe, because the sight needed is in your view of life. You can see it if you want to, if you truly need to or have the desire to truly live life. The goal of your life and what is in your best interest is in your view. As a part of your view is to bestow yourself with a meaning for your life. That meaning fulfills a specific purpose you set for yourself. Without either, you just waste time and all your effort.
Knowledge and Wisdom are your keys....
As you gain in age, you gain in knowledge and wisdom or suppose to. You gain in knowledge in two ways, education and experience. What you are taught and what you physical do through your own actions create the knowledge you accumulate.
The lessons you learn over the course of your life and the wisdom gained, is suppose to teach you the truth about your life. However, if you are taught by severely ignorant people or people who choose ignorance, then the supposed wisdom you gain will give you a false truth about life.
You will most likely pick up those traits from those people and become ignorant more so than if you learned from someone who had already gain true wisdom of life. How are you to tell the difference? Some people claim truth is known when it's heard and some would beg to differ on that statement. The wisdom of life that is to be gain is through rationally sane and reasoned conscious thought, reinforced by honest action. I do hope you learned something today.
Thank you for your time.

Hi Cages, I enjoyed your hub very much. My job is to a counselor which most people would see me as trying to change other in my practice, but that is not my job, I can only be a guide in the present, and they are the drivers of theri own present and future. If you cantot see your future in your mind then where are you headed? for me I do live in the present as much as I can, and I also view in my mind how I want things to be in my future. when other human being learn that they simpley have no control over others it would be a much better world to live in. Peace!!!!
I plan for my future but live today to the full... and I should have learned from the past!
Hey Cagsil, I voted this one up, because you're so right! I have spent so much of my life trying to live in the here and now, because my family and friends were always living in the past. Now, in the last few months, I have learned from you and started to actually look for my future, and see if I was going to get closer to where I wanted to go, by really concentrating my energy in that direction. I still fall back in the bad habit of living now, but the future is where I'm trying to live. Great hub! :)
Cagsil - thank you - another highly informative and very thought-provoking hub on a very important (from my 'angle-of-vision) subject.
Yes - I know a LOT about living in the past! Seems to be quite popular with many people and yet our future is created as we live by what we think and do NOW in preparation for that future.
Someone once suggested, however, that such a future can be difficult to create because and I quote; "Sometimes the very thing you're looking for, is the one thing you can't see!".
And that is why I so resonated with what you have written in your hub Cagsil.
Thank you - got me thinking - as you always do when you write like this.
The future may never come. In fact it will never come, one day in the future. The past was never there except for the paths we trod and the decisions we made. If we had made other decisions and trod others paths would not that past be different - and who is to say that those decisions were never made. The past is a time, if there is such a thing, where memories reside and we all know how fleeting they can be.
The present is never actually with us. For the infinitesimal, part-nanosecond that it is we are not quick enough to comprehend or be aware.
So like time itself they are all figments of our imagination. Like god's - made up to answer a question for which we as yet do not comprehend the conclusion.
So, to actually answer the question posed - I hover between the "present" and the "future", and think I know of the "past" and have one foot in each - clever trick that! Must be to do with passing through dimensions - am I on a piece of string?
why am I here, should i go? ..just wanted to let you know that I came and enjoyed my moment here
Interesting read. Perception is varied. Today I can communicate with someone in tomorrow and also in the past. Amazing how the whole spectrum works.
Hi Cagsil,
Several years ago I suffered from panic/anxiety. The biggest cause was worry. Worry about what might happen and regrets of the past. You know "If only I ...woulda, shoula, coulda....
I started meditation and living in the now. I can't change the past and I don't regret it, because it has made me the person I am today. And the future isn't here yet. So today, I choose to be present and live my life to the fullest. I'm am blessed.
Thank you for letting me share this present moment with you.
:) Wendy
Beautiful and inspiring article, I very much agree with you and give my best to live on the way you described, as much is possible, LOL. Thank you.
I enjoyed this hub very much , thanks for this.
Ray,you are right.I am not here by accident.Actually I was missing your insightful hubs.I kept checking if you had any after the "conscious mind" one. This one came after a long time.
There have been times when I lived in the past, but finally realized that was no use.More than education experience taught me a lot.I made my present useful to have a bright future, which I hope will turn out to be as I see it.
Thanks coz I am a little bit more wiser now after reading this article. You have lots to share...keep them flowing.
Ray, This is an interesting, thought provoking hub. I think if you have had a period of trauma in the past that some healing usually must take place and you have to be willing to move into today's reality before you can look to the future with hopefulness and joy. Many people get suck in different phases of life (I did that after a rather long period of abuse) but eventually I knew there was something better for me. I decided God had a plan for me. I became willing to take a step forward and let go of the past. Now I'm happy all the time and I look to the future with joy. Attitude is 99% of life.
Hey Cags~ I think Pam may well have hit it right on the nose. 99% of living is how we choose our attitude to be. You always make me think about my inner being Ray, and it is a very uplifting thing. Thank you for presenting such deep subject matter Sir!
~Always choose love~

Well Cagsil, I read your hub as I said I would. You're right-it is all about the perspective. Thanks for the reminder.
Up you went, and shared like - I'll leave that one.
On this topic the entire premise that Bill and Bob based what we now refer to as the AA [or whatever] 12 step program, was by a simple slogan, one day at a time, and somedays one hour at a time. But the critical step in all this, as any newcomer will tell you they have had heard enough of is; one day at a time [ODAAT] or stay in today.
Simplicity makes sense indeed, put into practice, is quite a bit different. However each person DOES have a choice, like the program. W are given no rules that dictate we can't live in the past and dwell on what has already been done, that cannot be undone, but we can however live a certain way if it helps us to live every day as a living amend, by learning from that to which we are not happy with and changing the behaviour today, or it didn't bother you in the first place. Kinda like 'I'm sorry' for me while maybe meant well, just doesn't seem real at all. Showing change, and starting with yourself creates, I feel, a greater understanding on what is right and wrong and I have found, when unconditional a deeper level of humility, thus compassion.
Ah, but the future. this is where I live to be always pulling myself back. The past is pretty clear for me, as are my consequences and the single only reason I don't hang there is it's selfish, and until one is out of self you cannot help others. I give away and expose myself to heal, yes but way more so to help. I kinda like helping people, as a matter of fact, nothing could be more important. Call me naive, tell me I just haven't been through enough, wait and see, I need to learn where my priorities fall. Call me what you want, and yes I get hurt, but people on a large scale I believe at the core mean well, and are doing the best they can with what they have. I am sincere when I tell you it is so seldom that I take someone's inventory, but am human. I mostly do not because I don't like to be judged myself. I'm cool with people saying 'she has no idea', but I do, just have no choice but to ignore it.
Anyways I am constantly pulling myself back from tomorrow, not just because of the obvious reasons is that I cannot predict what the future holds, nor change it, despite what I believe is possible and what I know is still not real. Clearly we can hope, plan use which craft, pray, pay for some guarantees that could lead to others. My two hilarious tactics to convince myself wholeheartedly that I am controlling my future live within worrying all the time as I white knuckle through each hour and ADD plays a large role in this, yet my dominating assurance on how tomorrow will absolutely play out [duh] is living in a fairytale type of thinking, and while consciously aware I have been a dreamer, ever since I could dream, I live in my driven, determined, convincing princess bubble, despite lessons learned, and being disappointed almost every time. We know that 90% of our expectations never come true. Still love the bubble, enough so I must be willing to handle the disappointments still cause one clearly outweighs the other, but slowly I am becoming wiser
I believe without doubt, people that sincerely learn from their past, have hope without expectation, and live in the present, even the moment by just taking the time to hear someone else, will most likely live a pretty fulfilled and gratifying life, to whatever age.
I hope you do Cagsil, very interesting.
Interesting hub. I think the past, the present and the future influence your life.
Hey Cags, this is a beautiful hub that is packed full of wisdom. Over the years, I have allowed myself to be pulled into the past (when I went through my divorce and didn't know how to let go) pushed into the future(when I worried about what tomorrow may or may not bring) and now that I'm older and wiser I realize that unless one pays attention and embraces some of the present now; the past nor the future really exits.:) Thanks for sharing your insight. Rating up! :)
Interesting hub, some good food for thought :).
When we were all kids and people asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up, we all had views and opinions and feelings about what we wanted. We began looking at the world with us in it, us there in that world. And as kids we have dreams and wishes and desires to be whatever it was / is we want in life. Some of us get that, and some of us do not. And some people have experiences that go down the wrong path, and crap happens. It has always amazed me and even today - I see it - how kids have this remarkable clear view of life, one that is simple and uncomplicated. Devoid of obstacles and pressures or dangers. I wonder how it is that as we grow up, we learn to be more cautious and afraid and hesitant.
Growing up can suck sometimes. LOL. But I take the view that I would rather aim high and make mistakes or miss some targets rather than not make plans and so never accomplish anything in life. Doing something to me is infinitely better than doing nothing. I see the future as being controlled by what I want and what I need. I know I don't have total control of the future, but the past is the past. That might sound cold, but I figure that if the whole world did its level best to learn from the past, then there's be no poverty or third world or people who are needy and we'd all be better off. But that is not the case. Instead, the world is more uneven, more split and divided than before. I see the past as a book that we can earn from, but I don't see how it can control our future...there is also a sizable quantity of people out there trying to re-write the past too, but that's a different thing altogether.
You make some great points here. Great hub, and quite thought provoking. I enjoyed reading. Cheers!
Hi Cags,
Just wanted to let you know that I was here and I enjoyed your article very much.
Myself, I live very little in the past unless it serves to guide a decision I am making to remember a path already taken. There are many sayings about history and one of my favorite is that "if you cannot remember the past you are condemned to repeat it". There are memories I like to revisit as well, but past is past and that's where it should remain.
The present is where we live now, and as one of your dear readers said before me (perhaps several); now is in constant flux, ever changing, fleeting moments, yet still we tend to take "now" in chunks, rather than break them into the milliseconds like scientists. We count "now" in events and time, to me, seems more fluid and somehow non-linear at times. Such as when our past seems like it was only yesterday, and the future seems very far, or it creeps up in an instant...or some things seem to happen all at once.
The future is ever-present, as it is healthy for us to have a tomorrow in mind. It is wonderful to have hopes and dreams, to have faith and plans, to believe in tomorrow. Whether this tomorrow is near or far and whether it be in physical form or if we are planning for the futures of our children or that of generations to come - it is a loving thing to look outside of one's own world and see how we can make changes and a difference in the lives of others be it today or tomorrow.
Namaste' and Brightest Blessings,
Erin
Beautifully written... I must admit, Ive been communicating with the past! Had a chat with my dead great uncle the other night and he agreed that his sexist racist writing of the era was not good.
Other than that present survival is being worked upon to create positive future outcomes!:) thankyou for the wonderful writing and framework!
You have some very interesting hubs.
I would really like to know about my future and like who ami marrying and what job i have and what is my future with a guy like and where ami living at with that someone
and do i have kids?
I am very goal-oriented no matter how old I get. I believe having goals keeps you young at heart. They don't have to be big goals - just something to strive for. But I also try to make the best of the present. Great Hub - thanks for sharing.
I think the past shapes us into making decisions in the present that can break us free from the past to make the future - very thoughtful Hub
Outstanding article which every hubbers need to come across.Yeah, you are right because many people don't really realize that their view and may continue living in their past is a very big hindrance to the future and the earlier they acknowledge that fact and begin to reason that wisdom and knowledge is the key,the better for their life.
Very inspirational and thoughtful piece, thank you for sharing, I thoroughly enjoyed it:)
Now this is a hub! I voted it up . I find living with an open mind in the moment the best , although you are right we sometimes get stuck in reverse or dreaming beyond the realities of the future. There are too many people who aren't in the moment though. There is a certain look about those who are wise . No?.....great hub :-}
A perfect article for the kind of evening and morning I have just had. Dreams reveal lots too and I had a doozy this morning. Voted up here and shared on FB.
Dear 'Cagsil' I would be honoured if you could stop by and read the translation of my Eastern European legend...after reading your beautiful 'reflection on wisdom and time of dreams on our journey from past' for second time, I realise that 'The Flying Cyprian' summons up everything you have written...
Thank you so much, dear Cagsil for your kind words and your prompt visit, I don't usually tend to bother people with my work, reading your great work prompting me to do so ...hub community is great in helping out and I really feel honoured to be part of such vibrant and thought provoking community...all the best and will catch up with you in the future checking your great hubs:)
Eckert Tolle's THE POWER OF NOW is an excellent book teaching one how to live in the present. I once lived in the past and at times even in the future, but since I've learnt how to live in the present I am the happiest ever.
Well done. You do wonders with your philosophical side. I think it is most difficult to not live in the present. In my own experience, I live day to day just to survive. It is a great mental challenge for all of us. Well done!
Cagsil - Pretty profound thinking! I acutally found one particular part really eye opening! Thank you for that - I have things to think about with regard to the above! Up and everything!
I like to live in the present. And I am attempting to try to live more in the present. But it is not always easy as the mind keeps wandering into the future or back into the past.
Your article promotes thinking, and that is always good, BUT-it is my premise that to think we control our own future is pure vanity. Think about this: the decisions of a married couple lead to divorce, and the eventual remarrying, resulting in new families, lives, careers, etc., etc. Now, after the fact, who are any of us to pass judgement on what went before us when in truth, altering those decisions (if indeed it were possible) would affectively nullify the existence of those who were born as a result of said divorce? I beieve you are capable of intelligent writing, BUT, you are not wise; you very well may suffer from a condition of delusion, believing yourself to be almost God-like. You did not create your intelligence anymore than you created your height. I believe that your arrogance will preclude your posting this.

Hi Cags; [Sorry..I'm not interested in sports paraphenalia. This is more my speed..heheh]. Anyway...
I enjoy living in the moment, and projecting myself into my future (no..no magic involved). While it's easy to get stuck when things don't go the way you'd like, you merely make adjustments and roll with the punches. A positive mindset allows this to happen almost without thinking.
At the same time it's sometimes useful to glean things from the past, but only as a reference point. I enjoy listening to older music and movies that I've heard and seen many times. I never dwell on the past, or use these things to think back to another time (nostalgia). I merely appreciate the art that was put into it.
btw, very good hub.
